L’estate del 1967, meglio conosciuta come Summer of Love, segnò un momento di rottura tra la cultura giovanile degli anni Sessanta (figlia della Beat Generation) e l’establishment culturale e socio-politico che governava l’America dagli anni Cinquanta.
A partire dal 1965 migliaia di hippies si stabilirono ad Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, dove vivevano secondo i loro ideali atti a rivendicare la libertà di pensiero, quella sessuale e quella inerente all’assunzione di droghe. L’arte in ogni suo linguaggio ne trasse beneficio e la musica, forse, fu l’espressione artistica che raggiunse i migliori risultati.
La Rhino Records per celebrare quel momento che in qualche modo già lasciava presagire la possibilità di eventi come quello che si verificherà a Woodstock solo due anni più tardi, edita una doppia compilation con i gruppi più significativi.
